Complex Materials Spectroscopy

Welcome to the Webpage of the Complex Materials Spectroscopy Group - Ollefs group!

We are part of the renowned Kirchhoff Institute for Physics at Heidelberg University and are dedicated to investigating various (magnetic) solid-state systems. Our work covers the entire spectrum of research, from fundamental physical questions to application-oriented research on, for example, magnetocaloric materials and permanent magnets. These innovative materials are key components of our modern technology: They are used in power generation, electrification, cooling, and computer hardware.

Our group employs the wide range of X-ray spectroscopy methods, which have become one of the most versatile probes for magnetism because they combine element, orbital and spin selectivity with the possibility of imaging, ultrafast pump–probe measurements and operation under diverse sample conditions. We employ these capabilities to observe the atomic-scale and electronic arrangements that underlie the functional response of magnetic materials. Specifically, our experiments allow us to understand how external stimuli,  temperature, static magnetic or electric fields, optical and microwave excitation, or pressure, can drive and modify phase transitions in magnetic systems, and to disentangle intrinsic magnetic parameters from contributions arising from micro- and nanostructure. Ultimately, this knowledge is a prerequisite for the rational design of advanced magnetic materials.
