Abstract (de)

Abstract (en)

The mass of the W boson is fixed by the electroweak sector of the Standard Model, which makes a precise measurement a test of the theory. The ATLAS collaboration pursues such a measurement with dedicated low-pileup datasets at √s = 5.02 TeV and 13 TeV. The mass is extracted from a profile likelihood fit of simulated templates to the measured distributions. This requires the simulation to reproduce the detector response. Simulated events are therefore reweighted by Scale Factors that correct the lepton reconstruction and selection efficiencies. A separate veto Scale Factor accounts for Z → μμ events that enter the W sample because one of the two muons was not reconstructed. This thesis verifies the implementation of these corrections in the analysis framework for both lepton flavours and both centre-of-mass energies. Their impact on the fitted mass isquantified with pseudo-data in the transverse mass fit in the W + → μ+ν channel at 5.02 TeV. The reconstruction and selection Scale Factors shift the fitted mass by 23.2 MeV, close to the statistical uncertainty of a single measurement. The effect of the veto Scale Factor is compatible with zero and stays below 1 MeV. A fit to the recorded data of both muon charges confirms this with shifts below 0.3 MeV. The veto correction is therefore negligible, although it is conceptually required.
