Experimentelle Teilchenphysik; Forschungsarbeiten mit dem ATLAS-Experiment am Large Hadron Collider (LHC, CERN) und Entwicklung neuer Detektortechnologien. Schwerpunkte der experimentellen Arbeit liegen auf der Entwicklung und dem Betrieb von Trigger- und Datennahmesystemen, der Analyse von ATLAS-Daten sowie der Konzeption neuartiger Detektorsystem für zukünftige Experimente der Teilchenphysik. Im Bereich der Analyse von LHC-Daten arbeitet die HEP-Forschungsgruppe des Kirchhoff-Instituts an der Vermessung seltener Prozesse und der Suche nach neuen Phänomenen jenseits des Standardmodells; ein besondere Schwerpunkt liegt hierbei auf der Suche nach Anzeichen für die Produktion Dunkler Materie (DM) am LHC. Die Arbeiten im Bereich der Detektorentwicklung fokusieren sich auf die Anwendung sog. Siliziumphotomultiplier (SiPMs) zur Lichtauslese von Szintillatore. Dabei wird an Einsatzmöglichkeiten sowohl für die Teilchenphysik (CALICE, Mu3e) als auch die medinzinische Bildgebung gearbeitet (EndoTOFPET US); seit neustem forscht die Gruppe auch an SiPM-Entwicklungen für den Einsatz beim DARWIN-Experiment zum direkten Nachweis Dunkler Materie.
